Fukagawa Drift Container Opened — the Liquid Inside Remains 'Unidentified'

The Third Appraisal Center on the 29th opened one of the three metal containers that washed ashore in Fukagawa 2-chome before dawn on Aug. 21, inside a sealed chamber. As previously reported, the liquid inside behaves like water and its isotope ratio matches no known lineage — the opening did nothing to explain why the liquid's surface fails to track the container's tilt. One new observation did surface: engraving on the container's inner surface bears a 'similar shape' to the symbols on the metal post from the separately reported provisional Lineage 148, though the center stopped short of asserting any connection. Attendance was limited to review-board members, Fukagawa neighborhood-association representatives, and center staff, with no media access.

Before dawn on Aug. 21, three metal containers washed ashore on a street in Fukagawa 2-chome. On the 29th, the Third Appraisal Center followed through on the review board's Sept. 16 decision and opened, inside a sealed chamber, the one container among the three where the liquid surface's failure to track its tilt has been most consistently observed. It was the 39th day since discovery. Following the airtightness test and equipment calibration that began on the 25th and the dry-run rehearsal on the 28th, the actual procedure ran through the previously reported sequence — measuring internal pressure, cracking the lid just enough to sample gas, and judging how far to open it from there. Work began just after 10 a.m. and took about four hours to complete, the center said. The other two containers, as previously reported, remain in indefinite storage and were untouched by today's work.

The opening confirmed that the container holds a liquid that behaves like water, as previously reported. Gas sampling and analysis turned up nothing that departed significantly from normal atmospheric composition. The isotope ratio — the central question — still matched none of the known lineages, even accounting for the 147 registered as of Sept. 16 plus provisional entries since. "It's less that this is a new lineage and more that it remains unlike any of the known ones — that's the accurate way to put it," an official said, declining to elaborate further. The phenomenon of the liquid's image failing to track the container's tilt under both X-ray and acoustic measurement was reconfirmed during today's procedure, but its cause remains unexplained. "We're long past the stage of doubting the equipment. Nothing today changed the previously reported view that this likely stems from some property of the object itself."

One new finding did emerge: engraving found on the container's inner surface. As previously reported, the three containers' outer engravings showed a slight difference in lettering style; today marked the first confirmation of a separate engraving on the inside of the opened container. According to the center, the strokes of this inner engraving share some resemblance with the symbol sequence carved into the metal post that drifted onto a Kameido street on the night of Sept. 1 — provisionally registered as Lineage 148 and, as previously reported, now formally entrusted for decoding to a mathematical analysis team from the Hindic Federation. An official was careful not to overstate it: "All we can say is that they look similar. It could just be that two unrelated drift objects, different in isotope ratio and origin, happen to share a similar line shape." As with the previously reported treatment of the resemblance between Window 5's drift object and Lineage 7's 'Lit City' tablets, the center is again declining to rush toward any claim of a connection based on shape alone. Detailed photography and measurement of the inner engraving will be prioritized and shared as reference material with the Hindic team.

Attendance was limited to review-board members, Fukagawa neighborhood-association representatives who volunteered, and center staff; no press were present. One association officer who attended told this paper afterward, "Honestly, I didn't expect anything major to come out of it, but I still wanted to see it with my own eyes. 'A liquid that looks like water' is about all I can honestly say." Another resident, who had remained divided over whether the opening should happen at all, said of the fact that only one container was touched, "I'm honestly relieved the other two weren't dragged into this." The review board's chair said, "We'll keep an honest record of both what we could and couldn't confirm today. Starting tomorrow, we move into re-examining how to handle the remaining two," stressing that the procedure itself was not being treated as any kind of endpoint.

The center plans to issue a same-day bulletin on the opening and its broad results, with detailed academic data — including isotope figures and the engraving comparison — expected around early October. How to handle the remaining two containers will be taken up again by the review board in light of today's results. "We'd said opening one might let us say something about the other two," the center said. "In practice, all we can really say is that they remain just as unknown." Even so, officials added, "recording what we don't know, honestly, as we don't know it — that itself is what today accomplished." Both the cause of the liquid's non-tracking surface and the origin of the engraving remain unresolved even after the opening. Coverage of the Fukagawa containers continues.

Fukagawa Drift Container: Final Rehearsal Held Ahead of Tomorrow's Opening

The Third Appraisal Center on the 28th ran a final rehearsal of tomorrow's opening of one of the three Fukagawa drift containers inside a sealed chamber, using no actual container and instead walking through the full sequence — pressure measurement, gas sampling, and emergency shutdown — while confirming the recording equipment's synchronization. The center said it foresaw 'no uncertainty in the procedure' ahead of the 29th, while reiterating that the opening would not necessarily explain why the liquid surface's image fails to track.

Fukagawa Drift Containers: Review Board Decides to Open Just One, Under Sealed Conditions — the Other Two to Remain in Storage

The Third Appraisal Center's review board decided on the 16th to open only one of the three metal containers that drifted ashore in Fukagawa 2-chome before dawn on Aug. 21 — and to do so under sealed, controlled conditions — while leaving the other two in indefinite storage for now. As previously reported, the liquid surfaces inside the containers still do not follow the container's tilt, and the slight difference in engraved lettering among the three remains unexplained; the opening itself will not take place until around the end of September, to allow time for a cautious approach.

Fukagawa Drift Object: Points Finalized Ahead of the 16th Review Board — 'Indefinite Storage' Now a Formal Agenda Item

Ahead of a Sept. 16 review board on whether to open the Fukagawa drift object, the Third Appraisal Center said it has finalized the points for discussion as of the 13th. It plans to share questions raised at the 12th's resident briefing, previously reported, and the proposal to leave the container sealed in indefinite storage will, for the first time, be treated as a formal agenda item.

Tentative Lineage 148's Metal Post: Decoding Formally Entrusted to a Hindic Math Team Under the Joint Study

The Third Appraisal Center announced on the 23rd that decoding the symbols on the metal post that drifted onto a Kameido street on the night of September 1 — provisionally registered as Lineage 148 — has been formally entrusted to a mathematical analysis team from the Hindic Federation, under the framework of the 7th International Joint Study. As previously reported, the symbols were thought to possibly represent a numbering system, but decoding work had gone largely untouched since August.

Mid-scale Yuragi hits Fukagawa before dawn; TDA recovers three cargo-like drift objects

A mid-scale Yuragi occurred on a street in Fukagawa 2-chome at around 3:40 a.m. on the 21st, leaving three drift objects believed to be cargo. The TDA recovered them; the area was cordoned off for about four hours. No injuries were reported.
