Window 1's 'Lit City' Likely to Open Tonight — the New Café Stays Full Through Its Third Day

The Dimensional Survey Division said on the morning of the 20th that Stable Window 1, 'the Lit City,' is 'likely to open tonight.' Tomoshimado Sabo, the privately run café that opened next to the observation rig on the 18th, previously reported, remains full on its third day, settling in as a new gathering place for those who miss the viewing lottery. Whether the window itself opens remains unknown until tonight.

The Dimensional Survey Division said at 6 a.m. on the 20th that Stable Window 1, "the Lit City," is "likely to open tonight." As previously reported, whether or when a window opens can never truly be forecast, so this remains only an estimate. An official said cautiously, "It does feel like there have been a run of nights it's opened lately, but I can't say that rises to a statistically supported pattern."

Tomoshimado Sabo, the privately run café that opened on the 18th, previously reported, is already fully booked for its afternoon slots as of the morning of the 20th — its third straight day of being packed, following an opening-day crowd of roughly 90 that was nearly triple what the shop had expected. Proprietor Saku Miyai, 38, said, "Day one surprised me at three times what we planned for, but if anything, day two and three have been busier still. With only 18 seats, we simply can't keep up some days."

Most customers, as previously reported, are people who missed the Window 1 viewing lottery, and family groups were again a common sight on the 20th. One regular, 29, who said she has missed the lottery three times running, said, "Waiting here has become its own kind of enjoyment, more than the viewing itself. I heard it might open tonight, so I'm stopping by on my way home from work."

The Division has repeatedly held, as previously reported, that while it "welcomes the café as a private-sector initiative," it is "strictly something happening outside the rig, and does not substitute for the function or role of the window room itself." An official reiterated on the 20th, "It doesn't lower the lottery odds — the daily cap of 80 slots stays the same. But giving people who miss out one more way to spend the wait isn't a bad thing."

Miyai also gave an update on a previously reported idea: seeking permission to post excerpts from window keepers' logs inside the shop. "I mentioned that I was in talks with the Division about this," he said. "They've told me they're working out exactly what can be shown. My thinking hasn't changed — not an 'answer' from the other side, but a place that introduces the words of the people doing the watching."

Elsewhere, Window 2, "the Sea of Mechanisms," has closed again as of the morning of the 20th, following its previously reported reopening on the 17th. Window 3, "the Slime Marsh," has shown no notable activity since the late-night contact observation involving "the Watcher" on the 18th, previously reported; the Division called it "an ordinary quiet window today." Windows 4 and 5 both remained closed.

A boy waiting at the café said, "If it opens, they say you can tell even from the café because the rig's lights get brighter. Just seeing that would make the trip worth it." His grandmother, 66, accompanying him, laughed: "There used to be no such thing as a window at all. Now there's a shop where people wait, hoping it'll open. This city has changed."

This reporter noted: "For every person who misses the lottery, some new way of waiting seems to appear. The number of windows hasn't grown, but the ways this city has found to hold them keep spreading." Whether Window 1 actually opens tonight remains, as always, something only tonight can answer.

A 'Window Café' Opens Off Haneda — A Place to Wait and Watch the Lit City, Lottery or No

A privately run café called Tomoshimado Sabo, or 'the Lit-Window Tea House,' opened on the 18th next to the observation rig for Stable Window 1, 'the Lit City,' off Haneda. As previously reported, the general viewing lottery can run more than twenty to one in some months; the café was conceived as a place for those who missed out, or families waiting their turn, to sit and watch the sea and the rig's lights instead of the window itself. The Dimensional Survey Division says it is the first private shop it has approved to use its published observation materials.

Another skyline on the far side of the glass: Stable Window 1 and 'the Lit City' enter a third year — and this paper opens a Dimensional Survey section

Stable Window 1, mounted on an observation tower off Haneda, has entered its third year of service. When the window opens, the night skyline of a stone high-rise city — provisionally named 'the Lit City' — spreads out beyond the glass. The TDA's Dimensional Survey Division now manages five such windows. From today this paper opens a Dimensional Survey section to report, every day, what is known and what is not about the worlds on the far side.

104 Tries Later, She Finally Wins the Lottery for Window 1 — Her First Night Looking Into 'the Lit City'

General viewings of 'the Lit City,' the first stable window off Haneda, are a popular draw with only 80 slots a day, decided by lottery. Among Wednesday night's group was a Tokei woman who had finally won a spot on her 104th application. The odds are reported now and then as a page regular, but tracing how long it actually took her to get in makes for a story with the kind of patience this beat runs on.

The Skyline the Diplomats Missed: 80 Schoolchildren See It the Next Day at Window 1

On the afternoon of Sept. 11, Stable Window 1 off Haneda opened during a scheduled public-lottery visit that included 80 schoolchildren on a social-studies trip — showing them the stone skyline of "the Lit City." The previous day, a delegation from Ameria touring the window for treaty talks left after two hours without it opening once, as previously reported. Over two days, adults and children each confirmed, in their own way, that the window keeps its own schedule.

Window 3's 'Slime Marsh': 'the Watcher' Touches the Glass for the First Time — For a Moment, Its Color Vanished

At Stable Window 3, 'the Slime Marsh' (Lineage 88), in the Inagi valley of West Tama, an individual known to window keepers as 'the Watcher' — which has repeatedly appeared before the window — was observed late on the 18th approaching close enough to touch the boundary glass directly for the first time since the window came into service. At the moment of contact, its color faded to near-colorlessness for several seconds before flickering rapidly. The Dimensional Survey Division maintains this is no proof the creature is 'looking back,' but says the observation is without precedent in its records.
