Counterfeit Window Merchandise Rides the Trend — Consumer Center: 'The Real Thing Never Reaches the Market'

Unauthorized, poorly made replicas of window merchandise have begun circulating on online marketplaces, riding the popularity of goods sold at the previously reported private cafe Tomoshi Madosabo, the city's Consumer Life Center told this paper on the 22nd. Complaint numbers have risen noticeably this month, and the TDA's Dimensional Survey Division is renewing its warning that genuine window drift objects belong to the state and never reach the open market.

According to the city's Consumer Life Center, more than ten complaints of the general shape "the window merchandise I ordered arrived as a cheap, shoddy item that didn't match the photo" have come in this month. As previously reported, Tomoshi Madosabo, which opened on the 18th, is the first private shop the Dimensional Survey Division has authorized to make commercial use of released observation materials — image data only — selling postcards and replica goods modeled on the "formula tablet" token from Lineage 7, "the Lit City." Most of the complaints the Center has received concern what appear to be cheap keychains and stickers imitating that same tablet, sold on online marketplaces under labels like "limited" or "just like the real thing."

A Division official reiterated, "Window drift objects become state property under the Dimensional Boundary Management Act and are appraised and managed by the Third Appraisal Center's window team. There is no institutional way for a genuine one to be sold to an individual." The goods sold at Tomoshi Madosabo are, by design, secondary designs based on released material, and owner Saku Miyai, 38, said, "Every item we sell carries our shop's stamp. Anything without it isn't ours." Miyai said several regular customers had asked this month, "Is this your shop's product?"

Center staff say most of the complaints take the shape of ordinary online-shopping disputes — items that arrived looking nothing like their photos, sellers who became unreachable — rather than anything specific to window merchandise; this looks more like the generic counterfeit problem that follows any highly talked-about product. Some sellers appear to be refusing refunds. The Center noted, "It isn't only window goods — the more a product is talked about, the more counterfeits tend to appear," and is urging buyers to check a seller's listed information before purchasing.

As previously reported, the Division has been considering guidelines for licensing commercial use of observation materials since Tomoshi Madosabo opened. An official said, "The counterfeit issue has surfaced before we finished the work, but a mechanism to distinguish authorized use from imitation was already on our list of things to work out," adding that a timeline for publishing the guidelines remains undecided but that the work will be expedited. For a cafe that keeps a shelf of materials on the ethics debate — the privacy of the world seen through the window, the commercialization of tours — the counterfeit problem now runs directly into that same existing question of what commercialization should look like.

The Center has also received reports suggesting that goods imitating other high-profile new lineages — including the previously reported Lineage 122, the Sunamachi child's shoe, and Lineage 150, the Fukagawa bell — have appeared online even before formal appraisal is complete. A Third Appraisal Center official said, "There have also been cases of drift objects still under appraisal having their images used without permission, which we're treating as a separate concern from the window merchandise issue," adding that the Center itself, not only the Survey Division, plans to step up its own public communication going forward.

A 45-year-old regular customer waiting in line at Tomoshi Madosabo said, "Maybe it just means the window has become such an everyday part of our lives that we can't even tell real from fake anymore." Another voice in line added, "It's a shame for the first shop the Division ever approved to get a black mark over counterfeits." The Center said the damage has not spread widely so far, but added that as long as the topic stays popular, complaints could keep rising, and it will continue urging caution. For now, Tomoshi Madosabo intends to limit sales strictly to its own counter and its own online store; Miyai said quietly, "Rather than adding more products to fight counterfeits, I think making sure every single item carries our stamp comes first."

A 'Window Café' Opens Off Haneda — A Place to Wait and Watch the Lit City, Lottery or No

A privately run café called Tomoshimado Sabo, or 'the Lit-Window Tea House,' opened on the 18th next to the observation rig for Stable Window 1, 'the Lit City,' off Haneda. As previously reported, the general viewing lottery can run more than twenty to one in some months; the café was conceived as a place for those who missed out, or families waiting their turn, to sit and watch the sea and the rig's lights instead of the window itself. The Dimensional Survey Division says it is the first private shop it has approved to use its published observation materials.

The Dimensional Survey Division 'Watches Closely' as Genshu Makes News — Tonight, the Same Five Windows as Ever

The TDA's Dimensional Survey Division held its regular briefing on the 22nd in response to Genshu's announcement of a confirmed recurring Yuragi, previously reported. Officials said they are 'watching closely' while stressing that operations at Hinokuni's own five stable windows remain entirely unchanged. Today's forecast calls for Window 1 likely open in the evening and Window 3 likely open all day, with Windows 2, 4 and 5 closed. At the Tomoshi Madosabo cafe tonight, the usual line of customers formed, whether or not they'd heard the news from Genshu.
