Window 5's Two Recovered Items Come Back 'Unidentified' — Clasp and Braided Cord Still Unclassified

The No. 3 Appraisal Center's window team announced appraisal results on the 27th for two window-drift items recovered from Window 5, 'the Sword Country' — a clasp found on September 7 and a tassel-like braided cord found on September 21. Both came back 'unidentified,' with material and method matching no known lineage record. Despite repeated observations of resemblance to Lineage 7's 'ritual tablets,' the appraisal again maintained that 'closeness in shape is all that can be said.'

The No. 3 Appraisal Center's window team announced appraisal results on the 27th for two window-drift items recovered from Window 5, "the Sword Country" (Lineage 52): the previously reported clasp, recovered September 7, and the tassel-like braided cord recovered September 21. Neither matched any known lineage record — spanning the 121 confirmed lineages, with the catalog reaching Lineage 150 as of September 18 — in isotope ratio or fiber structure, and both will be filed under "unidentified" in the registry. A window-team representative explained, "Window-drift items don't reach the market since they revert to the state, but the appraisal process itself follows the same steps as any other drift item."

The clasp is, as previously reported, a small metal component; this round of analysis newly found faint incised markings on its surface, whose meaning or purpose remains unknown. The cord resembles a plant-fiber structure but does not fully match any known plant species' fiber, leading the window team to say, "A plant origin is likely, but we can't state it as confirmed." Whether the two items share any common method of manufacture "cannot be determined from this round of analysis," the team concluded.

The resemblance to Lineage 7 "the Lit City's" "ritual tablets," as previously reported, has come up repeatedly in observations through Window 5 itself. In this appraisal, the window team cross-checked existing Lit City reference material against the shape data of the clasp and cord, and stated, "There is a shared design sense in the arrangement of the incisions and the way the cord is tied, but the materials themselves do not match, so once again all we can say is that the shapes are close." The relationship between Lineage 52 and Lineage 7 remains unresolved and is expected to be taken up by the outside advisory panel whose members were confirmed on the 25th.

According to the window team, both items, as previously reported, revert to the state under the Dimensional Boundary Management Act, and once appraisal is complete they will be held on registry shelves under the "unidentified" category at the No. 3 Appraisal Center. While some items — the previously reported Lineage 122 child's shoe among them — have gone on temporary public display at the municipal drift-item museum, the team says these two will remain non-public for now, since "releasing them before the incised markings and knotting pattern have been fully analyzed risks inviting mistaken speculation." A window-team representative said, "Given how much attention the resemblance to the Lit City is already drawing, photos alone could get taken as a definitive answer the moment they circulate. We want to handle this one carefully."

A window-team appraiser, name withheld, told this paper, "An 'unidentified' result is itself useful — it becomes a point of comparison the next time something else turns up. We're keeping these two on the shelf for the day we can finally check them against something else." According to the Dimensional Survey Division, Window 5, less than half a year into service, has been rapidly accumulating observation material — including the previously reported 87-minute opening on the 26th — and opportunities to recover further window-drift items are expected to increase.

An appraisal result that ends in a single word, "unidentified," reads as unremarkable on the page. But there was something in the appraiser's phrase — keeping the items on the shelf "for the day we can finally check them against something else" — that seemed to capture the essence of this beat. Recording what remains unknown, carefully, as unknown: that, it seems, is the quietest and most reliable work being done here, in service of some future day when the other side of the window can finally be checked against.

Three Hours of Swords and a Procession: Window 5's 'Sword Country' Observed at Length for the First Time

At Stable Window 5, behind the Third Appraisal Center in Kameido, an opening lasted three hours and twenty minutes on the night of the 7th — the longest observation since the window entered service. In Lineage 52, provisionally named 'the Sword Country,' a market street along a stone wall and a procession of armored figures were confirmed, and the Center's window team recovered a small metal buckle found lying just past the glass.

Window 5's 'Sword Country' Opens for 42 Minutes — A Second Window Drift Object, a Tasseled Cord

Stable Window 5, 'the Sword Country' (Lineage 52), behind the Third Appraisal Center in Kameido, opened for 42 minutes from 1:18 a.m. on the 21st, again showing a bustling market and a procession along the city wall. In the post-closure inspection, a second window drift object was recovered — a tasseled woven cord — following the previously reported metal buckle. Some in the procession again carried the tally tags resembling Lineage 7's 'the Lit City,' but as before, the relationship between the two lineages remains an open question for the division to study.

Window 5 'the Sword Country' Stays Open Over an Hour for the First Time — Market 'Tablets' Again Resemble the Lit City's

Window 5, 'the Sword Country' (Lineage 52), stayed open for 87 minutes from 2:14 a.m. on the 26th. As previously reported, Window 5 has had short openings and scant observation data so far, but this marks its longest yet. A market street scene showed residents holding up tablets again strikingly similar to the 'ritual tablets' of Lineage 7, 'the Lit City.'

TDA Names Seven to New External Advisory Panel on the Windows — Kajiura of Wan'yo University to Chair

The TDA's Dimensional Survey Division announced on the 25th that seven members have been provisionally named to the external advisory panel it had previously said would launch before year's end. Etsuko Kajiura, 58, a Wan'yo University professor specializing in information and bioethics, will chair the panel. Also among the members is Ikuko Tatewaki, the constitutional law professor at Tokei Law University who has appeared in these pages before. The agenda lines up a season's worth of unresolved events: the split and 'call-and-response' of Window 2's tower structures, Window 3's individual 'the Watcher' approaching the boundary glass, the migration of Window 4's settlement, and the resemblance between Window 5's drift finds and Lineage 7. The first meeting is being scheduled for early November.
